This work, “Pīwakawaka”, explores the presence of the pīwakawaka (fantail) as a spiritual messenger and guide within te Ao Māori. Often seen flitting into view at moments of transition or reflection, the pīwakawaka carries with it ancestral whispers. Subtle reminders of our whakapapa and the intangible threads that connect us to those who came before. “Pīwakawaka” reminds us of connection, connection to the land, to the past, and to each other. Calling attention to the ways our lives are interwoven across generations. It invites the viewer to consider how messages from beyond are received and interpreted, and how our tūpuna continue to shape our paths.
Woodcut is a relief printmaking technique where an image is carved into the surface of a wooden block. The areas that are cut away do not print, while the raised (uncarved) areas hold the ink. Once the block is carved, ink is rolled onto the surface with a brayer, and paper is pressed onto the inked block with a high-pressure printmaking press to create the print. Woodcuts are known for their bold lines, strong contrasts, and graphic quality.
