"HUKUMARO" is an artwork that interprets the concept of time through the elegant form of a bird's tail. Shannon uses the "Past Present Future" symbol to represent the interconnectedness of generations. The unique qualities of the Burnt Ash enhances the visual impact of the piece. The title, "HUKUMARO" (tail of a bird, tail feather), becomes a symbol of movement, direction, and the ongoing flow of time.

The most distinctive feature of this piece is the brass staples that bridge and bind the natural cracks within the wood. Rather than concealing these fractures, the brass celebrates them—acting as a deliberate, golden repair that holds the form together. This juxtaposition of wood and metal speaks to the resilience of the spirit: even when feathered or frayed by life’s journeys, we find the means to remain whole.

The artwork features a blackened finish, achieved through a traditional burning process that deepens the natural grain before being stained. This texture symbolizes the transformative power of fire—representing the endurance of hardship and the strength found in what remains.

The binding at the top symbolizes the strength of our friendships and whānau (family) ties, illustrating how we are all interconnected.
